As I often do at this time of the year, I've been thinking a lot about Christmas. Like usual though, my thought have been taking a specific path.  The Candy Cane. When I was little I had a book called The Legend of the Candy Cane. I don't really remember the book too well and actually don't think I liked it very much. However, I do remember a few things.  The candy cane is shaped in a very special way. One way it looks like a shepherds staff, symbolizing the shepherds who came at the angel's word to see Him. Now flip your candy cane around. It's now the capitol letter "J" standing for Jesus who is what Christmas is all about.  (and is also called the Good Shepherd) Now-a-days people have made different looking candy canes, but the traditional ones are red and white. This symbolizes the sacrifice Jesus made for us. The red symbolizes His blood and the white our purity after we accept Him. His blood washes us white as snow. At Christmas, I like to n

Forgiveness is hard and sometimes painful. But  God commands it. In Matthew 6, right after teaching the disciple to pray Jesus says  "For if you forgive other people when they sin against you, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. But if you do not forgive others their sins, your Father will not forgive your sins." Ouch.  There are many examples in Scripture of forgiveness. Jesus Himself with his dying breath said "Father forgive them for the know not what they do."  But let's turn for a few moments to the very first book of the Bible. I'm not going to put it here because if I did you'd still be reading next year, but I encourage you to read at your own time Genesis Chapters 37, 39-45.   In these passages we read of a young man named Joseph. The flood of Noah's day was a pretty huge event.  In my last post, Fact or fantasy -how big was it?  I talked about the common misinterpretation of how the ark  was built and it's size. This week, we're going to look at another of these common misinterpretations. The flood itself. In Genesis 7:4 and 17 - 23 it says: ""Seven days from now I'll send rain on the earth for 40 days and 40 nights, and I'll destroy every living creature that I've made."... Every living thing on earth died flying creatures, livestock, wildlife, all creatures that swarm over the earth, and all human beings. Everything that breathed and everything that had lived on dry land died. All existing creatures that had lived on the surface of the ground were annihilated, from humans to livestock, from crawling creatures to birds of the sky. They were wiped off the earth. Have you ever seen children's Bibles? The picture of Noah's ark usually looks something like this. There are a few common misinterpretations dealing with the account of the worldwide flood. T o start with, depending on the picture you look at it either has the animals sticking their heads out a window, sticking their heads out the roof or lounging on the deck.  I really doubt they would have done any of those things if it was very stormy which the Bible says it was. If the ark looked like that, how in the world did Noah get ALL the animals in? Yesterday, my worker and I did something I haven't done in ten or twelve years. We went for a bike ride!! My parents bought me a bike when I was about six and when I outgrew that one...they bought me another. These bikes are different than your typical bike. Having the challenges I do, I can't ride a regular bike, I  ride something called a recumbent bike. This is fun  Because I haven't ridden the bike is ten or twelve years we weren't actually sure a. if I could actually do it and b. if it would be in good enough working condition to even try. Dad had to put air in the tires and while he was doing that he noticed that the peddles were broken. The straps that hold my feet were still there though, and my adventurous worker agreed to give it a try. After a quick training session on the bike (there really isn't much to learn, it's pretty simple) we started off down the driveway and turned left.
